Everyday from this July 8 to September 12, there is a new 'Sound and Light' show going on in front of the Parliament hill. The show has been going on for some decades and newly updated for this year. This year's theme is more focused on Canada's diverse people, culture, and nature background. Compare to the previous years, the show suggests more patriotic themes. Though it's not as much as the people would feel uncomfortable by the message. Some controversial part of the history, like the conflict with the aboriginals, was admitted and shown. It's something really amazing about Canada. If you are in Ottawa, but haven't watched the show yet, I would recommend you to watch it. More information can be found from the official website.

Is this the miniature of reality or the reality in miniature?
Sometimes we have to see the world from a different perspective.

Summer Job.

Since the beginning of the week, I've been going to the St.Pius High School for the training of the Newcomer Orientation Week program. After this one week of training, then another one week of real deal will starts from next Monday. This is my second summer doing the same job, so gladly the curriculum and some of the people are familiar to me. Maybe this is too good to be called 'high school summer job', since I work inside, earns around 10$ per hour, provided with quality breakfast and lunch, and full coverage of transportation fee. The job I do is being a peer leader, who leads the orientation that supports and gives the information to the newcomers of the Canadian high school. The program is designed by the Ottawa Community Immigration Service Organization and well funded by the Ministry of the Immigration Canada. Personally, this job is more than just a paycheck. Through this program, I'm glad that I can be a help for someone who was once like me. Going to a high school that is totally different from the previous system is a big challenge. For them, I can be the guide and provide the help that they desperately need. It's amazing how much the Canadian government is spending money on the program like this. I'm happy to be in a country like this that has so many varieties of culture, language, and people.

Hot Shot.

I remember the time I bought the Element backpack from the West49 store. It was around two years ago after the visit to Korea. For now, it's hard to recall the reason why I bought the skater backpack even though I wasn't a skater. Though, the only thing I can remember is that skater clothing looked 'cool'. When you think about your past behaviour, sometimes you'll find it ridiculous or rather pathetic. For me, this back pack is the symbol of my confused adolescent :) the period that I was trying to be someone else other than me. Oh well, I don't know if I'm still a confused teenager. Hopefully, the new backpack becomes the symbol of 'evolving'.

Inception.

For the first time, I watched the same movie twice in a cinema. It was sure different feeling while watching it for the second time, since I was able to catch up the story and spot a foreshadowing. I remember the feeling I had after watching 'the Dark Knight' almost two years ago. Ever since, it has been my favourite movie. From now, a film from the same director, 'the Inception' is taking over that spot. I was amazed by the concepts the movie has shown, the fluent progress of scenario, and the soundtracks along with it. I was once again realized how important is the music in terms of creating suspense and emotion with visuals. The movie was an impressive work done by the director, Christopher Nolan, the composer, Hans Zimmer, and all of the actors and staffs who worked on this masterpiece.

Fahrenheit 451.

Fahrenheit 451
the temperature at which book paper
catches fire, and burns...

The system is simple; Books are for burning, along with the houses in which they were hidden and firemen are the one who does the job. The fictional future of a country reached the state that puts blame of emotional conflicts and instability on books. Book burning incidents had happen frequently along the history. It was often lead by the invaders, government, religious group, or the community that was motivated by an objection. The author believe,'censorship' is the modernized way of burning books. Most of the governments that start doing censorship begin with the purpose of protecting society, which later can become a breach of democracy. Though, in every societies, there will be people who are up to a right thing and fight for the evolution.
The following phrase is taken from the interview with the author, Ray Bradbury. It reflects his idea of the book well. "Let's imagine there's an earthquake tomorrow in the average university town. If only two buildings remained intact at the end of the earthquake, what would they have to be in order to rebuild everything that had been lost? Number one would be the medical building, because you need that to help people survive, to heal injuries and sickness. The other building would be the library. All the other buildings are contained in that one. People could go into the library and get all the books they needed in literature or social economics or politics or engineering and take the books out on the lawn and sit down and read. Reading is at the center of our lives. The library is our brain. Without the library, you have no civilization."

War Memorial.

“Our Nation honors her sons and daughters, who answered the call
to defend a country they never knew and a people they never met.”
- Korean War Veterans Memorial

I remember that I used to be so much careless about wars and neglect the consequences happening around the world. In fact, there are still wars going on while I'm living in peacefully between Canada and Korea. My grandparent's generations have been directly experienced it only 60 years ago during the Korean War; while the new generations are going through the different kind of experience of war, by watching digital screen and playing the 'Modern Warfare'.  I believe war has been the topic that lacks empathy for the digital ages. So, I want to be always aware and remembered the cruelty and the inhumanity of war. It should be avoided at all cost.
