Hamlet.

"Imperious Caesar, dead and turned to clay,
Might stop a hole to keep the wind away.
Oh, that that earth, which kept the world in awe,
Should patch a wall t' expel the winter's flaw!"

"The great emperor Caesar, dead and turned to clay,
might plug up a hole to keep the wind away.
Oh, to think that the same body that once ruled the world
could now patch up a wall!"

Turandot.

What is born each night and dies each dawn? "Hope"
What flickers red and warm like a flame, yet is not a flame? "Blood"
What is like ice, but burns like fire? "...Turandot!"

The very first opera I ever saw was Mozart's 'Don Giovanni' during the winter of 2007. It was a grade 9 music field trip to the National Art Center, which I had no interest at all at the time. Though it  turned out to be better than I thought. The second opera was Bizet's 'Carmen' in the summer of 2010, few months ago, at the Seoul Art Center. After the show, the experience I had was unforgettable and I was fascinated by it. Today, I watched Puccini's 'Turandot' at the National Art Center and the feeling of it still remains. Some might find operas not interesting and hard. I would understand because the language is usually not in English and the story development happens in very slow speed. However, watching an opera would be an unique experience that can't be imitated anywhere else. There is something very attractive in opera, whether it's the orchestra music or the singers' voice. Out of two and a half an hour, hearing 'Nessun dorma', one of the best-known tenor arias, made my night. Good thing to live in Ottawa is that, High school and University students can get an inexpensive ticket through 'LiveRush' program, which sells leftover tickets from the day before the show. The seat I sat was Orchestra prime level, which would originally cost me 110$, but only 15$ through the program.

Equity, not Equality.

Some might say that equity and equality are the same thing. The word 'equity' is defined as 'quality of being fair' and 'equality' is defined as 'quality of being same'. By looking at the definition of the two words, they might sounds similar, but in fact they are defined very differently. These words become a real issue when it comes to the education and the judicial system. Equality is a very important foundation of the two mechanism. No matter who you are, you have the equal right and opportunity to go to school and to be appear in a court. Equality guarantees and protect us from discrimination and favouritism. This was what I've been stubbornly believing, the most important constitution of our minds and system. However, my idea have changed through time and wondered what would be more ideal between the equal or equatable system. Then, I found that sometimes being equal can be a flaw. In education, everyone is different in terms of learning style, speed, and level, but when the equal educational system is used for everyone, the consequence would be vary, such as high failure rate or lost interest among students. In legal sense, sentencing the same imprisonment for the same crime to a habitual criminal and a first time offender, make me wonder if that's the true justice. 'Quality of being equal' to everyone is important, but the 'quality of being fair' to everyone is important as well. Thinking about equity, To have an equitable system, it has to create temporal inequality. In other words, some would be treated differently than others. This sounds very dangerous, but in fact, the idea of equitable system is to help the disadvantage group more than the advantage group when the system is equal. For example, different school curriculum and style that suits individual's ability and level and the judicial judgement with the consideration of the accused. Some might disagree with me about the idea and some might think equitable system is not possible since everyone is too different. Even for me, it's hard to say which system would work better. But what I'm personally believing, is the idea of equity, that everyone has to have fair ground on educational and judicial system.

---

This is just an idea note. I haven't study deep enough so I might be missing some points or using the wrong examples. Please think of this as a beginner's brainstorm. Though any comment of argument or agreement would be welcomed. I first wrote this in English and tried to translate it into Korean after. Unfortunately, there isn't perfect Korean word to describe 'equity' as the same meaning in English.

Glee.

The innovative TV show that incorporated comedy, drama, and music into an hour of 22 episodes. Watching Glee has been part of my enjoyment for the past months. I'm not a big fan of TV shows and specially not the drama genre, but Glee was something different than any others. Beyond the ordinary high school stories as what I might have expected, the Glee had very progressive and important messages to the viewers and the society as a whole. Although the main story is about the high school show choir group, called the 'Glee', each episode consisted with a theme or a message. Some of the topics were about dreams, homosexual, peer pressure, disability, ethnic minority, family, and relationship. The main message above all, is that everyone is unique own their way and beautiful. I don't know how many TV shows in these days could create a such sensation like the 'Glee' did. I guess that's why so many got enthusiastic about this new sensational TV show and called themselves as 'Gleek'. I am also excited for an another season of Glee, which will be premiered on September 21, 2010. For aside, the first season of the 'Glee'  has won 'Emmy', 'People's choice', and 'Golden Globe' award and the third season has already been ordered.

The Wars

The war to end all wars.

For the past 10 days, I've been reading 'The Wars', the winner of the Governor General's award for English language fiction. The book was originally published in 1977 by the Canadian author, Timothy Findley. The story is about Robert Ross, a sensitive nineteen-year-old Canadian Officer, who went abroad to France during the First World War. The scenery through the texts is well described enough to give you the rich images; Trench warfare, mud and smoke, chlorine gas, and rotting corpses. The book is written in very unique style, that include all three first-, second-, third-person narrative and time shift of back and forth. After finishing the book, I became curious of the title. Why is it 'The Wars' when the story is only about the First World War; Also what does it mean by the introduction quote 'The War to end all wars'? It was not hard when you think about the symbol of the 'War' represents. War is a conflict. The conflict can be meaning physical warfare, but an internal conflict of a person as well. Since the discovery, I realized what it truly means by 'the Wars' and 'The war to end all wars'. What a modern classic.
